Western China has long been an undefined country — ethnically, geographically, and politically diverse; an autonomous merger of people and culture. So it’s no surprise that the region’s vital musical export, The Travelers, should play music that is equally divergent. The band’s instrumentation shows the influence of their land’s historic crossing of nomadic cultures — the Mongolian Dombra, the Matouqin (a two-string horse-head fiddle), the shaman drum and African drums — as does their mixing of musical styles: From Chinese Long Song and traditional chanting, to Mongolian Hoomei singing and modern western music.
