An experimental reverie and deceptively simple tale of revenge, Living in Seduced Circumstances leaves sanity at the wayside in exchange for raw psychological thrill. In the same vein of visceral shock and dreamlike imagery as his previous films, Filipino-American director Ian Gamazon brings to life the most unexpected but eerie of villains.
An older gentleman Mr. Thanh (Long Nguyen) is kidnapped, bound, and gagged by a woman he does not recognize (Quynn Ton). In a car stocked with hypodermic syringes, his captor, 8-months-pregnant Mihn, drives her victim to a remote location. With a terrifying, primal malevolence, Mihn pushes Mr. Thanh to his limits physically and mentally, performing cruel acts of torture including shooting arrows into the air in his general direction and asking which eye he would like to keep. Tensions are mounted by Mr. Thanh’s impossibility of escape as he is bound and tied to a wheelchair at a secluded mountain cabin. Prospects for the pitiful victim look dim as Mihn’s heinous acts become increasingly intimate and we realize her motives are personal and are product of a calculated revenge.
Gamazon’s playful manipulation of time and his simulation of the dream state leave to be discovered that nothing is quite as it seems. Mihn’s character is a highly developed hybrid of acute intelligence, female sensuality, and unforgiving wrath, embodying and demonstrating the primordial vengeance of a woman scorned. The climax is a culmination of realizations and perplexities that continue on until the end, begging an intense intrigue and awe. Questioning and prodding the realities of the modern Vietnamese-American experience, Living in Seduced Circumstances demonstrates a break in convention and a step towards the unimaginable.
